Middle: a transitional phase

Per Moya Butxon
Elementary and Middle School Coordinator at CreaNova School

Our Middle stage, which comprises the end of the Elementary years (5th and 6th Primary) and the beginning of Secondary Education (1st ESO), is carefully organised to ensure that the transition is as natural as possible for our pupils.

During this stage, students undergo many changes, and our main objective is to accompany them in this very special phase. As pre-adolescents, they can be especially fragile socially and emotionally, also in relation to the physical changes they undergo. We pay specific attention to this part of their development through observation, active listening and specific moments where our students can express their worries, concerns, ideas and suggestions for improvement.

Students take part in interesting and engaging workshops that connect them with the reality of the world around them. They develop communication skills as well as entrepreneurial initiative and diverse knowledge. The arts are developed through music, art and creative workshops, which expand and become more specific and specialised as they grow.

They are given more and more responsibility and autonomy. They learn to manage their time and become more efficient during the workshops.

Great emphasis is placed on developing the ability to express oneself verbally and to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The older pupils at this stage are introduced to new workshops that form part of the High stage, so that they gradually become integrated into the new dynamics.

Even so, the Middle groups share different moments, such as outings, excursions with stays and special workshops.

The most important factor continues to be the individual attention and support they receive from their tutors and teachers.
