Libraries Day

Every 24 October is celebrated as Libraries Day: a place to travel to new worlds, to lose yourself in them, but also to recognise and find yourself. As James Baldwin said: «You read something you thought was your own experience, and you discover that it happened to Dostoevsky a hundred years ago. Then you feel a profound liberation: you realise that you are not alone in your pain or in your struggle. And that's where the real importance of art lies».

At CreaNova School we celebrate this day by remembering that libraries are not only places full of books, but also havens of imagination, knowledge and empathy. They are open doors to other lives, to other voices and to the possibility of better understanding our own.

Here is a selection of literary reviews and recommendations created with enthusiasm and sensitivity by our avid readers in the Maathai assembly (2nd ESO), young people who discover in books not only stories, but also new ways of looking at and understanding the world.

A child and his bad luck...

Greg's diary, old school, is a book by the American writer Jeff Kinney, in which Greg, an unfortunate teenager, has to face his bad luck.

His school will soon be going on an excursion, but he initially refuses to take part.

Suddenly, an unexpected change of plans will force him to face up to it. What dangers will he encounter?

I liked this book and I recommend it for its funny and crazy antics and for the adventures the main character has, from breaking the toilet to finding a monster's house.

Hello! Today I am going to recommend a book to you: Small history of the world, by Fernando García de Cortázar. It was published in 2009 with the aim of explaining different events of the past in a simple and entertaining way.

It is a work that will immerse you in the evolution of humanity, from its origins to the present day. Without a doubt, 10/10!

If you like fantasy books, I recommend the saga of books by Harry Potter, I'm only going to tell you about the first one today: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

This is the first book in the saga. It is about an orphan boy who, on his birthday, learns that his parents were great wizards. This boy, Harry, is a poor boy who lives in the house of his uncle, who treats him very badly.

Thanks to an invitation from Hogwarts, the school of magic, he will be able to leave Hogwarts and make lots of friends and have great adventures!

I liked the film better, but the book is good because you can imagine everything and use your creativity.

It was published in 1997 by J. K. Rowling, the author of the entire saga.

Can you imagine falling into a tree one day and destroying a nest? No? Well, in Wild Robot, written by Peter Brown, you will live that situation.

Roz, a stray robot, has to look after a duck after accidentally causing the death of its parents.

I highly recommend this book because it was one of the first books that I really liked and that I could read without getting tired of it. Later, I also saw the film, and I understood the difficulty of being a mother.

What would you do if you were trapped in a labyrinth? Would you escape, would you stay...?

This is the story of Maze Runner, a book written by James Dashner in 2009.

It is about a boy who wakes up trapped in a labyrinth and can't remember anything but his name. After a few days without being able to get out of there, strange things start to happen...

What I liked most about this story is that it hooks you from the very beginning. I recommend it for those who loved it. The Hunger Games and Divergent, because Maze Runner is also about characters trapped by society. But... society acts like that because it's bad? You'll know if you read this book!

In this story, our protagonist's mother has a disease that, for the moment, has no cure.

Nila, her daughter, wants to help her mother and try to discover a remedy. To do so, she will have to go through countless trials and dangers.

This book, The daughter of the moon, written by Greta Xella and published in 2021 by Liana Editorial, is a beautiful story that links fantasy and reality. It is the perfect book for rainy afternoons and for when you are looking for some quiet time.

Today I am going to recommend a book I read. It is called Amanda Black, A Dangerous Inheritance. The authors are Bárbara Montes and Juan Gómez-Jurado. The story is about the adventures of Amanda, a girl who, on her 13th birthday, is given a letter informing her that she has inherited a mysterious mansion. To keep it, she must face different challenges and discover for herself the truth about the death of her parents and the family legacy that is hers. If you like books full of mystery, I recommend it! I give it five stars.

Today I am going to recommend a book that for me is the best in the world. If you like romance, this story is for you.

The book is called When the sky turns yellow and is written by the author Nerea Pascual. It is about Lola, a teenager in her last year of high school. She is full of worries about her future and doesn't know what to do with her life.

Nico, on the other hand, lives each day as if it were his last and enjoys the present very much because he doesn't know what will happen next.

Without expecting it, their paths cross and they immediately become each other: the perfect person at the perfect time.

This story conveys a lot and, although there are hard moments, there are also moments of great romance.

I recommend the book Murder for Beginners, written by Holly Jackson.

This book is about a teenager named Pipa Fitz-Amobi, a girl who decides to investigate a case: that of Andie Bell, a girl her own age who disappeared.

Pipa takes the case because she doesn't believe the version the police have given as true. Determined to discover the truth on her own, the book recounts all the adventures she has during her investigation, which ends up becoming her end-of-year trip.

I recommend the book Outsiders of time because it is very entertaining. It's about a family, the Balbuena family, who have all the time in the world to travel through black holes. In total, it is a collection of 19 books... Endless adventures!

The title of the book is The camp. The author of the novel is Blue Jeans with another fiction thriller. It will be published in 2021.

The plot consists of the story of ten of the country's most promising boys under the age of 23. They have been invited to a very special camp in the Pyrenees, as they are all dying to get in... but they will also die if they don't get out.

The precursor of this idea is one of the richest men in Spain, who is looking for someone young to help him give a new image to his empire and, in the future, to take his place.

In this idyllic setting, they will be groomed to become the right-hand men of this questionable millionaire: but only one of them will succeed. They will only have one handicap: no mobile phones and no communication with the outside world.

Things go according to plan and the young people enjoy the experience until, on the second Friday of their stay, the group's coordinators disappear and one of the young people disappears under strange circumstances. From that moment on, everything will change and unexpected events will take place.

I like this book because it grabs you with the jumps in time and the different perspectives of each of the young people. I recommend it!

One vulgar, two princes, one the executor and the other the heir. This is the story of the first book of the saga. Powerless. This book tells the story of Paedyn, who lives in the kingdom of Ilya, a place where the elite, the powerful and the special live. The vulgar, on the other hand, are just that: vulgar.

When the king decrees that the vulgar will be eliminated to protect the elites, he turns Paedyn Gray into a criminal by destiny and a thief by necessity. Moreover, Paedyn saves the executioner and is forced to participate in the purge trials, tests designed to showcase her powers, which she lacks. If the trials don't kill her, the princes will when they find out what she really is...

This book is written by Lauren Roberts, from 2023. It is a saga of four books and my favourites are the third and fourth. They all have a bit of romance, challenge and fantasy.
